The Eastwood connection is active once more as 22 year old shot stopper Shane Redmond joins Paul Cox’s side, penning a one year deal at Field Mill. The Eastwood connection is not the only one involved in this transfer though, as Shane becomes the latest player to switch from a rival club – having spent last season with bitter rivals Chesterfield.
The fact that connection exists is an irrelevance at the moment though, how I long for the days when we can pinch a player from the dark side & it will annoy them and create another level of rivalry! If there’s one thing I miss about league football, it’s the derby games with Chesterfield – Liam’s last minute winner is the best birthday present I’ve ever received.
Back to the present day, Shane links up with former boss Paul Cox once more after the former Republic of Ireland U21 keeper played for Paul’s Eastwood side three seasons ago, putting in top performances between the sticks as Eastwood embarked on a decent FA Cup Run.
Redmond began his career at Nottingham Forest as a trainee and was loaned out to Eastwood, Burton & Darlington respectively during his time with Forest. He spent last season warming the bench at Chesterfield as understudy to Tommy Lee, picking up a league winners medal.
Capped 21 times for his country at Under 21 level, Shane comes to Field Mill in the hope of beating fans favourite Alan Marriott to the number 1 shirt, his arrival I presume will spell the end for Neil Collett who was rumoured to be training with the club despite being released.
Shane is a very able keeper and again ticks the boxes on Paul Cox’s list of requirements, I expect him to come here and prove his worth, he will learn from Marriott & push him to up his game in the process. This is another well considered deal which will prove a great bit of business by Paul Cox in the long run.
I look forward to seeing Redmond in action during pre-season & welcome him to field mill. Pre-season draws ever closer, the closer it gets the more excited I become – roll on next Saturday!
In other news from the stags, the new look youth academy have been drawn at home to Lincoln City in the 1st round of the Midlands Youth Cup, which will take place at Field Mill on a date before 30th September, I hope to have news on coverage soon.
